Irene B. Grocott, age 97 of Akron passed away on Thursday, August 18, 2022. She was born on December 23, 1924 in Market Harborough, England
to the late Lewin and Lily Marshall.
Irene met her husband William while he was stationed in England. He was a soldier on guard at a military hospital where she was visiting a friend. Once he returned to the USA they kept in touch, two years later after his departure Irene and a neighbor, who was also being courted by an American soldier, traveled to the USA. The four of them traveled to New York where they would be witnesses for each other as they got married at The Little Church Around the Corner. From here Irene and William started a family and would raise 5 children. Late in life Irene chose to study to get her teaching degree. She would use this degree to bring her love of art into the lives of many kids. This love of art kept her going well into her 90s. Irene spent many years enjoying her time at craft shows. Completing her final craft show at the age of 95. Irene loved spending time with her family, reminiscing about the past, her monthly English Club, watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. She was a wealth of history and love. Right up until the end you could find her enjoying her nightly "nip" of Bailey's or RumChata and a cold glass of Fiji water.
In addition to her parents, Irene was preceded in death by her husband of 25 years, William H. Grocott, brothers Ken and Stan Marshall, sister Florence Marshall and grandsons Erik Thorla, Daniel Hunter and Aaron Grocott.
Irene will always be loved by her children Bill Grocott, Kathy (Larry) Kinsey, David (Donna) Grocott, Gwyneth (Mike) Hunter and Matthew (Viv) Grocott; grandchildren Kara Higgins, Becca (Matt) Gill, Andrew (Krystal) Grocott, Jennifer (Jeremy) Stanton, Heather (Nate McCutcheon) Thorla, Nathan Grocott, Ben Grocott and Melissa (Jameson) Hughes, Tim Hunter; great-grandchildren Brevin and Autumn Higgins, Derek and Daniel Gill, Cameron Grocott, Christopher Carr, Jessica (Josh) Boyes and Jaimie Stanton, Aurelia Hughes; sister Greta Stray.
All are invited to visit at Newcomer Funeral Home, 131 N. Canton Rd. Akron, OH 44305 on Thursday, September 15, from 1:00 p.m. until the memorial service begins at 2:00 p.m. Private committal services will be held at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, where Irene will be laid to rest with William.
