Irene Ikana Mosquito made her final journey on March 15th, 2021. Irene was born October 20, 1933 at Mary's Igloo, Alaska to Fred and Mary Ann Mosquito.
She lived in the Akron area most of her adult life, attending Goodyear Heights Baptist Church with her husband Lawrence F. Thornton, Jr. Irene was active in the North American Native Culture helping native families in the Akron area. Irene was proud of her Alaskan heritage and always felt that Alaska was her home. She returned to Alaska for several years until her house was badly damaged by an earthquake in 2018. Irene enjoyed life, loved her morning coffee, and watching the birds at the feeder. She loved a good home cooked meal, nature, butterflies and visiting with her great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her sister Florence Pennington of Anchorage, Alaska just one year ago; her second husband Phillip "Beagle" Bullock; daughters Cerine {Thornton} Haden and Verine {Thornton} Nutter.
Irene is survived by her only sister, Lucille Whisenant of Anchorage, Alaska, several nieces and nephews there; sons Richard Lee Thornton of Akron, Lawrence "Larry" Fletcher Thornton, III (Mary) of Alliance, daughter Mary Ann {Thornton} Tomasik of Akron, and son-in-law Ken Haden of Knoxville, Tennessee; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Irene was a sweet woman to all and will be greatly missed. Donations may be made in memory of Irene Mosquito to the Alaskan Native Lutheran Church, 1420 Cordova St., Anchorage, Alaska 99501. To leave a message for Irene's family, please scroll below.
