James Gilbert "Jimmy" Finney died peacefully at home on February 23, 2024 after a long illness. He spent his last days as he spent the last 45 years, in the company of his loving wife and best friend, Elaine.
Jimmy was born to Peggy and George Finney in Akron in 1941. He graduated from Coventry High School and went on to work at Aircraft Braking Systems, where he built a 35-year career. When Jimmy and Elaine flew, he loved to joke that others on the plane should be nervous because he could have made the plane's brakes.
Jimmy had a lifelong love of the outdoors. He was happiest when fishing, camping and exploring the wilderness, often with his family. One year Jimmy took his family to visit every state park in Ohio, an accomplishment that gave him great pride. The fish near Port Clinton will surely notice his absence, as he frequently fished there with friends from work. Jimmy was also an avid reader, regularly reading three books per week.
Jimmy leaves behind his beloved wife Elaine, who was his faithful companion on all of his adventures. Jimmy and Elaine supported each other's hobbies, with Elaine tagging along on fishing trips and Jimmy helping her with her quilting projects.
He is survived by his children, Carol Finney, Lori Phelps, Kelli (David) Moore and Robert Finney; as well as nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister, Alice Marie (Jerry) Blitz. Jimmy's kindness and wisdom will be missed. He frequently reminded his loved ones to "accept today and learn from it." His loss will be hard to accept, but his memory will be treasured always.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 2nd at 11:00 a.m., with services to follow at 12:00 p.m. at Goodyear Heights Presbyterian Church, 1430 Goodyear Blvd, Akron, OH 44305. Donations in Jimmy's honor may be made to the Akron Summit County Public Library LEDS Program, to help share his love of reading far and wide.
