James Michael Shimko, "Jim", age 84 of Akron, Ohio, died on March 24, 2021 at Akron City Hospital after suffering a massive stroke.
He was born on November 23, 1936 in Akron, the son of the late Michael John and Ruth (nee Butcher) Shimko, and was a lifelong resident of the Akron area while spending winters in Largo, Florida for a time during retirement.
Jim graduated from Central High School and was an honorably discharged US Navy Veteran serving during the Vietnam War as an Aviation Electricians Mate, and he attained the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class.
Afterwards, Jim was employed by Goodyear for 23 years. He was also employed at Akron Home Medical for several years until changing careers and becoming a Respiratory Therapist, serving at Children's Hospital and Medical Center of Akron and All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg, FL.
Jim finally retired in 2020 after a long and rewarding career as a Respiratory Therapist.
Other than his parents, James was preceded in death by his sister, Sheila Shimko.
Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 60 years, the former Marilyn Nervo, whom he married on June 11, 1960; his two sons, James and Todd Shimko; his siblings, Robert (Mary) Shimko and Joan (William) Fox; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
All calling hours and the Funeral Mass will be private and all arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Newcomer Funeral Home, Akron.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St Matthew Parish, Akron, Ohio, in Jim's memory.
