John F. Powers, 88 years old, was born February 20, 1923 in Paden City, West Virginia to Clayton and Edna Powers. He stepped into eternity on March 11, 2011 surrounded by his family; joining Madeline, his wife of 63 years, in glory. John was a loving father and grandfather. He served his country during World War II returning from the European Theater with two bronze stars. A committed believer in Christ, John used his gift of music to serve Him.
After receiving his Mechanical Engineering degree from Ohio State, John worked at Firestone Tire and Rubber Company. He enjoyed golf and was a member of the Firestone Country Club. His most famous shot happened when he made a hole-in-one after leaving the hospital the day Madeline gave birth to their twin girls. He is pictured in the Akron Beacon Journal with a big grin holding a golf club and two pair of booties.
John enjoyed music and was blessed with musical talent playing various instruments in his High School band. As he matured, his love for the violin grew. He was privileged to play with the Doctor's Orchestra in Akron in the 1960's. Encouraging the next generation's musical talents, John took great joy in playing the violin together with his great niece, Destiny.
John and Madeline had the opportunity to live in England for a portion of their life together where they made lifelong friends. They also traveled in Africa spending months with their daughters and their families making precious memories together. In later years they enjoyed traveling in their RV making friends and enjoying life at Thousand Trails campgrounds where they volunteered their time helping wherever they could. John picked up the hobby of fishing and everyone enjoyed his good fishing fortune at the regular campground fish fry.
John was faithful and active in his local church and the campground chapel services. He enjoyed playing the violin in worship, glorifying God with his gift of music.
He is survived by two daughters, Debbie McFerron and husband Jerry of Nairobi Kenya and Kathie Davis and husband Ted of Kansas City, Missouri, four grandchildren Charles and Nicholas McFerron and Joshua and Kristina Davis, and three nieces and their families.
