John James "Jack" Spade, Sr.
John James "Jack" Spade, Sr. (aka Sam), died at 3:15 p.m. on Friday, May 12, 2006 at Akron City Hospital. Jack was born March 21, 1923 in Akron, the son of Clark J. and Iva Greely Spade (both deceased). He was raised in East Akron where he attended Windemere Grade School. He also attended Hower Vocational School and East High School. He was married to Evelyn Seevers with whom he had one son, Terry, but they subsequently divorced. He then married Katherine "Kaye" Silvey. Kaye, his wife of 58 years survives him along with his two sons, Terry S. Bowman of Murphysboro, Illinois and John J. Spade, Jr. of El Segundo, California; his two daughters, Joyce Spade of Akron and Jill A. Spade of Lawndale, California; plus several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Both of his parents, his brother, Clark "Bud", sister, Dorothy, infant son, Jonathan, and grandson, Michael Bowman preceded him in death. Jack served in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1945 aboard the submarine USS Croaker and in Operation Dragon. He also served in the U.S. Navy Reserves from 1947 to 1951 at Naval Air Station Akron. His military decorations include the American Campaign Medal, European Theater of Operations with Star, and World War II Victory Medal. He was a professional truck driver and Teamster for 44 years, having worked for Motor Cargo, Yankee Lines, and retiring from Mason Dixon Lines. He was a life member of the U.S. Submarine Veterans of World War II where he served two terms as President of the North East Ohio Chapter from 1994 to 1996. He was also a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Turkeyfoot Sportsman Club. His hobbies included fishing, pool, and card playing. Family and friends may call on Friday from 5-8 p.m. at NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 131 N. Canton Rd., where funeral services will be held Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Interment at Hillside Memorial Park.
