On October 18, 2020, John "Jay" Francis Spence of Akron, Ohio, departed his earthly body and became present with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ after a valiant battle with cancer. He was 67 years old. Jay passed from this life surrounded by his closest family and was never alone. Jay handled death as he handled life, Steadfast and Fearless, Seasoned with Grace and Faith, and Eyes fixed Fervently on his Savior!
Jay was born October 26, 1952 in Akron, Ohio to the late Christine (nee Harshbarger) and George Pavick. Jay was then adopted at a young age by his late father, Stanley Spence. He was the youngest boy of six children.
Jay was a graduate of Kenmore High School, Class of 1970. Jay served in the Air Force from 1976-1980, where he received Airman of the Year at the Air Force Academy in 1979 and a Good Conduct Medal. He honorably discharged as a Sergeant.
He worked as a computer programmer, following his Air Force commitment until he came to work, alongside his daughter and son-in-law in 2008 and worked tirelessly until his retirement in 2019. Jay was a member of The Chapel in Green where he enjoyed his time with his ABF and was in love with the time spent and the people in his choir family.
Other than his parents, Jay was preceded by his son, Sean; and half-sister, Lynn Pavick.
Survivors include his daughter, Joy (Joshua) Griffith; his grandchildren, Aiden, Aaron, Alison and Autumn Griffith. Also surviving are his siblings, George (Jan), Larry (Mary), Judith (Brooks) Gray, Anna (Ted) Callas, Sheree (Joy) McGuinness; and half-sisters, Yvonne Hulton, and Colleen Pavick. Jay also has countless nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be Thursday, October 22nd from 12:00 - 2:00 pm at The Chapel in Green, 1800 Raber Rd, Green, OH 44685. The service will be held directly after the calling hours at 2:00 PM, also at The Chapel in Green.
A private burial will take place for family only.
