John Tosenberger, age 87 passed away peacefully on February 16, 2022 after a long battle with Alzheimer's. John was born April 15, 1934 in Djakovo, Croatia to the late Michael and Katherine {Reder} Tosenberger.
John spent his early childhood in Croatia, Yugoslavia and Salzburg, Austria. He immigrated to the United States with his brother Rudy at 15. John served in the Army, 82nd Airborne from 1956 until he was honorably discharged in 1958.
John retired from Kent State University and later, St. Patrick's Church in Kent. John worked at Kent State University in the facilities maintenance section. He was a painter for many years and rose to the position of superintendent of the paint shop and eventually the entire maintenance section. He retired in 1983 and went to work at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Kent, Ohio as the maintenance manager. He also painted homes as a side job.
John was an avid outdoorsman. He loved fishing and enjoyed traveling to Canada and the Gulf of Mexico on fishing trips, often with his brother Mike. John was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Kent Canadian Club. He enjoyed many trips to the great outdoors at the club properties. In his younger years he loved to go hunting but rarely brought anything back because he just loved being outdoors with nature. He has fond memories of climbing the Australian Alps when he lived in that area.
John is survived by his loving and devoted wife Carole {Kline} Tosenberger. Children Leah {Tosenberger} Proffitt, John Michael (Valeria) Tosenberger, Tim (Kim) Kline, Robert (Alicia) Kline, Brenda (Yancey) Smith and Larry Kline. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. John was preceded in death by his father and mother, his sister Josefine Wendl, brother Rudy, and first wife Frances {Kohn} Tosenberger.
Calling hours will be held at Newcomer Funeral Home, 131 North Canton Rd. Akron, OH on Wednesday, February 23 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 24 at St. Peter of the Fields, 3487 Old Forge Rd., Rootstown, OH. A graveside service will follow at Restland Cemetery in Brimfield, where well-deserved military honors will take place. A gathering with refreshments will be held back at the church hall immediately after the graveside service, to celebrate John's life.
