Johnnie Ruth Betts

March 21, 1940 — March 19, 2025

Johnnie Ruth Betts, a beloved matriarch and vibrant soul, passed away on March 19, 2025, in Akron, Ohio, just two days shy of her 85th birthday. Born in Toomsuba, Mississippi, on March 21, 1940, her journey through life was marked by warmth, independence, and a fiercely loving spirit.

A proud member of the Phillip's Chapel CME Church for over 50 years, Johnnie was deeply involved in her community. Her voice graced the church choir, and she selflessly served as a Missionary, embodying the values of faith and service that she cherished. Her dedication to her faith inspired many around her and is a testament to the strong legacy she leaves behind.

Johnnie enjoyed a varied career, contributing her talents at General Tire, Sears, State Liquor Control, and several stores throughout the city of Akron. She also worked as a residential Case Worker at the Oriana House, where her compassionate nature shone through in her service to others.

Known for her feisty personality, Johnnie was a woman of independence who taught her children the importance of standing on their own two feet. With a knack for fixing anything in and around the house, her home was always a reflection of her vibrant spirit. Johnnie was jazzy and stylish, she loved to shop, and she had a special fondness for flowers, peanuts, and sweets, especially cake. Her vivaciousness and zest for life truly made her shine.

Among her greatest joys were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought endless love and laughter into her life. Johnnie cherished moments spent with them, often creating precious memories during outings to Las Vegas with her dear friends Claudia and Shirley.

She is survived by her loving children: Rev. Deborah Betts-Moore, David Jr. (Kimberly) Betts, and Danella Betts; daughter-in-law Cliffie Betts ; son-in-law Gary Green; her cherished grandchildren, Darius Green, Tiana Carmona, Kelvin Leatherwood, Dentrus and Jasmine May, Tamika and Tiara Tomlinson; and a host of great-grandchildren who will carry on her spirited legacy. Johnnie is also remembered fondly by her sister, Ola Mae Ellison; and a host of other relatives and close friends.

Johnnie rejoins her loved ones who have passed before her: her mother, Mattie Kelly; her daughter, Rev. Brenda Green; her son, Bryan Betts; her grandsons, Anton Betts and David McCoy; and her former husband, David Betts Sr. Together, they now watch over her.
