Kenneth Eugene Smelko, 72, died on May 5, 2010, at Akron City Hospital after a 5 year courageous battle with cancer, following a massive heart attack. Born in Bellaire, OH to John A. Smelko and Gladys N. Seevers, on June 12, 1937. He attended Central High School and proudly served in the U.S. Air Force. He retired from the Akron Equipment Co. after 37 years of service. He will be remembered as a loving husband and father. He loved sports and enjoyed watching the Browns, Cavaliers and Indians play. He leaves his beloved and devoted wife, Helen, of almost 46 years of marriage; his children, Tena (Roger) McGough, Kenneth Smelko, Jr., Mark (Sherri) Smelko, Sherri Smelko, and April (John) Higgins; sisters, Deloris (Frank) Russo and Deanie (Joe) Webb; grandchildren, Candice Hartney, Mark Smelko, Nickolas Hartney, Cayden Crowe, Jessica Hodges, Brandy Stowe, Gena McKinney, Zackary Hodges, Emily Hodges, Alexis Stowe; and many nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be Sunday, 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and Monday, 10-11 a.m. at NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 131 N. Canton Rd., where a funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. Interment at Greenlawn Cemetery in Uniontown.
