Lawrence Eugene Smith "Ted", 85, of Akron, passed away January 3, 2012. He left this world peacefully in the arms of Jesus. Ted was born October 18, 1926 in Erbacon, West Virginia to the late Carl and Orla Smith. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the Pacific Theater in the U.S. Army. He retired from Babcock & Wilcox after 38 years of service and was a longtime parishioner of Visitation of Mary (formerly Annunciation Church). In addition to his parents, Ted was preceded in death by his wife, Irene. He will be deeply missed by his children, Pat (Sue) Smith, Jeanie (Roger) Vernotzy, Tim (Bonnie) Smith, Ann (Butch) Gour, Mary Jones, Therese (Harold "Shorty") Hutchens, Rita Smith, Monica Smith, Joan Grant, and Terri Securro. Ted was one of eleven children and is survived by his sisters, Donna (Charles) Langford, Janet Irene Martin, and Linda (Gene) Crispin and brother, Sonny (Mary Ann) Smith. He also leaves 31 grandchildren, 65 great-grandchildren, 7 great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Visitation will be Thursday January 5 from 4-8 p.m. at NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 131 N. Canton Rd. A prayer service will be held on Friday at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. at Visitation of Mary (formerly Annunciation Church), 87 Broad St., Akron. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Summa.
