In the early morning of December 10, 2013, Leo McCloskey unexpectedly transitioned to his next life where many family and friends who have gone before him were waiting with open arms to greet him. He is greatly missed by those he leaves behind.
Leo was born on June 29, 1920, to Leokadia (Wojoiehowski) and Joseph McCloskey, as the youngest of 8 children, in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. A 1939 graduate of Johnstown High School, he was proud of being chosen to work in the district's junior high school office during his senior year. Leo also played the village drunk, Muff Potter, in the school play of Tom Sawyer.
Leo began his career at Glossar Brothers Department Store in Johnstown as a stock boy in the Baby Department. In the fall of 1940, he began a nine-month training program in Detroit with Burrough's Adding Machine Company where he learned to repair every kind of office machine Burrough's produced. In June of 1942, he was drafted into the US Army and was stationed at Camp Wheeler, GA; Fort Slocum, NY; then boarded the Chateau Thierry bound for Newfoundland where he worked at the 4th HQ of the 1st Battalion, 3rd Infantry as an office typist until his discharge in November of 1945, with the rank of Sergeant Technician T4.
After the Army, Leo went back to Burrough's in Pittsburgh and then transferred to Canton where he met his future wife, Audrey Roth. In October of 1951, Leo went to work at Akron's Firestone Tire and Rubber Company in their Office Machine Repair Department. By then, he and Audrey were married and Barbara was born. Judith was born soon after and the family moved to Springfield Township where Leo and Audrey lived for 48 years before moving to Tallmadge. Leo retired from Firestone's Department of Systems and Procedures with 30 years of service.
Leo enjoyed photography, woodworking and home remodeling, reading, creating stained glass pieces, and making wine.
Leo was preceded in death by his parents and his seven brothers and sisters. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Audrey; daughters, Barbara Moore and Judith McCloskey Crossen (Dennis); granddaughter, Jillian (Jason) O'Connor; great granddaughter, Jaclynn LeeAnn; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be Monday, 5-7:30 p.m., at NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 131 N. Canton Rd., Akron. Private interment will take place at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.
