Leroy R. Smith Jr.

Leroy R. Smith Jr., 82, passed away January 11, 2019, surrounded by his loving family. He was born September 28, 1936, the son of Leroy R. Smith Sr. and Flora (Douglas) Smith. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy and worked for the Acme Grocery Company from 1955 to 1997. He began his career in the grocery stores before becoming a driver, delivering food service across the state of Ohio. He and his wife, Garda also delighted children as Santa and Mrs. Claus for 32 years. Leroy had a big personality and was the guy everyone looked forward to seeing. He enjoyed playing euchre, poker, and spending time with his family. He was a longtime member of the Barberton Moose. He is survived by his daughters, Michelle "Shelly" (Bryan) Eiseman, Diane Smith and Jodie Berger; sons, Jeff (Beth) Smith, Doug (Sue) Gilbert, Tim (Karla) Gilbert and Rickey Gilbert; grandchildren, Tiffany, Chad, Jen, Bradley, Michael, Heather, Ashley, Brittany, Rickey, Maegan, Renee, Mindy, Timmy, Adam and Vincent; sisters, Nancy Jackson, Betty Soley and Alice Fowler; 13 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Garda and sister, Constance Wagner. Family and friends may visit on Sunday, January 13, 2019 from 4-7 p.m. at NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 131 N. Canton Rd., Akron, where funeral services will be held on Monday at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Jeanette Brown officiating. Interment at East Liberty Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the family.
