Lois Evelyn Smith (nee Brueggeman), 97, of Akron went to be with the Lord on October 17, 2022. Lois was born on August 15, 1925 in Akron, Ohio to the late Edwin and Esther Brueggeman.
She was a graduate of The University of Akron's accelerated engineering program. Lois proudly served with the design and manufacturing team for the making of the Corsair aircraft during WWII. She worked for the city of Akron highway engineering department as the first female draftsperson where she met the love of her life, her husband of 56 years, Frank C. Smith. She volunteered as a poll worker for the Summit County Board of Elections for over 40 years. She was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church. Lois had immense faith and lived her life devoted to God and family. Lois was a loving, caring and dedicated wife, mother, grandma and great-grandma and will be missed by all who knew her.
Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; her brothers, Edwin Brueggeman and William Brueggeman; and her sister, Marjorie Vasilev. She is survived by her daughters Donna (Robert) Nelisse and Susan (Gerald) Young; grandchildren Laura (David) Benedict and Andrew (Xinran) Young; great-grandchildren Eloise, Stephen and Susan Benedict; sister Carolyn Ruff; brother James Brueggeman and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at Zion Lutheran Church, 139 S. High St. Akron, OH 44308 on Friday, October 28 from 9:30 a.m. until the funeral service begins at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Keith Johnson officiating. A committal service will follow at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, where Lois will be laid to rest with Frank. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Zion Lutheran Church Budget Fund.
