Lyle B. Schwilling
Lyle B. Schwilling, 80, passed away peacefully on Ocotober 31, 2008 with his loving wife Penny at his side. He was born on December 24, 1927 in Clements, Kansas, one of 12 children of Joseph and Esther Schwilling. He spent his early life in Cottonwood Falls and graduated from Chase County High School in 1945. He joined the US Army Air Corps in 1946 and was assigned to the Air Weather Wing stationed in Tokyo, Japan. One of his proudest accomplishments was climbing Mt. Fuji at the age of twenty-three. He graduated from Kansas State University in 1952 with a degree in journalism. His first job was as a sports writer/announcer for the Topeka Daily Capital, followed by several years with United Press International (UPI) in New Orleans. He then joined PR agency Carl Byoir Associates in New York City and Hallmark in Kansas City. In 1966 he moved to Akron to accept a position in the public relations division of the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. Two years later he was named Public Relations Manager for the Goodyear Aerospace Corporation (now Loral). He retired as Director of Public Relations. Lyle always claimed he was a "Kansas farmer at heart" and purchased a small farm close to his home. One of his favorite hobbies was woodcutting and after his retirement he had a small enterprise supplying dozens of customers with truckloads of firewood each fall. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Howard (Irene) and Marvin (Floy). He is survived by his loving wife, Penny; brothers, Russell (Norma), Wayne (Sue), Harry (Dee), and sisters, Bernice (Doc) Weamer and Shirley (Bill) Cowdrey of Kansas. He will be missed by the Bluhm and Ensslin families and his friends on Vaughn Trail. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 6:30-8:00 p.m. and funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Brown-Bennett-Alexander Funeral Home in Cottonwood Falls, KS.
