Marino Dimengo
Marino Dimengo passed away Monday after a short illness. Marino was born at home on Collinwood Avenue on June 10, 1926 the third of 5 children of Carlo and Santa Dimengo. He was a life-long resident of Akron, Ohio growing up on North Hill. As a boy he enjoyed basketball playing on the great North High teams of 1943 and 1944. Also as a boy he began his enjoyment of golf beginning as a caddy at Portage Country Club.
Marino was an Army veteran of World War II. He served with the 359th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division in combat in France, Germany and Czechoslovakia. After the war he served in Munich with the occupation forces. For his service he was awarded the Bronze Star and the Combat Infantryman's Badge, among other awards.
Following his return to Akron he briefly attended Kent State University before marrying Marian G. Roberts who was at his side until her death in September 2000 raising two children at their home in Goodyear Heights. For most of his working life Marino was a machinist with Ford Motor Company at the Walton Hills plant retiring in 1991 with more than 27 years service.
Marino never missed a chance to travel to see new sights. He, his wife and other relatives traveled frequently to South Carolina which was a favorite. He also recalled fondly his trips to Canada and to the northern Plains. He loved air travel and made trips on jets and propeller airplanes, a helicopter, a seaplane and the Goodyear blimp. He looked forward to a little small stakes gambling and occasionally made the trip to Ocean City, West Virginia, and Las Vegas.
Marino enjoyed golf throughout his life often playing with friends and family. He was particularly proud of his two holes-in-one. He was happiest though among his family and friends where he was always quick with a joke and ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. In his later life he was especially fond of having breakfast with his friends from his youth on North Hill.
Marino was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Marian; his parents, Carlo and Santa Dimengo and bothers, Ronald and Eugene.
