Marjorie Watters

May 23, 1932 — January 25, 2025

Akron

On January 25th, when Marjorie Watters left this world, she did not fade but rather blossomed into the vastness of the heavens, where all love and light reigns eternal.

Born on May 23, 1932, in Farell, Pennsylvania, she was the seventh of eight daughters born to Ross and Sarah Burt.

In 1950, she graduated from Farrell High School, a beloved figure among her peers, often described as a ‘sharp, shy, and sweet beauty.’ Her presence graced many corners of school life, from contributing to The Reflector staff to lending her voice to the Concert Choir, Glee Club, and Chorus, among other pursuits. Her quiet charm and dedication left a lasting impression on all who knew her.

Her beauty and sweet aura was a beacon that could not be ignored, captivating the heart of Lewis Watters, a pilot who he wrote as his ‘dream girl.’ Enraptured by her elegance, he found his own way to make his presence known. While others might rev their engines, Lewis would glide his plane above her high school, sending a silent but unmistakable signal through the skies—an aerial declaration of his admiration, always just a glance away.

After a five-month long courtship, they wed on October 24, 1951.

In 2007, Marjorie wrote of their love story which won awards for movie-worthy romance. Their story garnered attention and went viral in 2020. For 92 years, Marjorie Watters was a devoted member of the Church of God, frequently sharing her deep affection for the summer campgrounds of Zion Hill where she and her family created cherished memories.

Upon marrying Lewis, she also became an active member of Saint Paul Baptist Church, where she served as a deaconess and passionately led the Sunbeam Choir as its director.

Marjorie was renowned for having the ‘touch of the master’s hand’ when it came to baking. With a gift that turned ingredients into perfection, she ran her beloved business, Margie’s Pies, from her home, delighting clients and local businesses alike. Her pastries, praised as heavenly by all who tasted them, became a cherished staple, leaving a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to enjoy her creations.

Aside from baking, she enjoyed many activities such as gardening--she was awarded by the City of Akron for her landscape designs her trademark of exotic florals that garnered attention by many Akron locals and her community members.

She delighted in traveling with her husband to a variety of destinations, including the Philippines, the Cayman Islands, and beyond.

She took great pleasure in watching sports such as basketball and was the Cleveland Cavaliers biggest fan.

For many years, Marjorie was a cherished member of the Golden Hearts Society, where her warmth, wisdom, and kindness touched the lives of all who knew her. Her presence in the group was a testament to her unwavering spirit and her love for community, and she will be fondly remembered by all whose hearts she so generously uplifted.

As she now rests in the embrace of eternity, the love she gave, the laughter she shared, and the light she radiated will forever echo in the hearts of those who were blessed to know her. Though her earthly journey has ended, her spirit lives on in every cherished memory, in every life she touched, and in every act of kindness that bears her name. May her soul soar in peace, and may we find comfort in knowing that her love will continue to guide us, like a gentle breeze, forever and always.

Marjorie is reunited with her parents, Ross and Sarah Burt, her husband Lewis Watters, her grandson Andre Watters Jr., and her seven sisters; Katherine, Mary, Julie, Lenora, Loretta, Carie, and DeEtta.

She is survived by her five children, Andre, Carole, Pierre, and Anthony (Debbie) of Akron, Ohio, Laurence (Althea) of Southfield, Mich. 9 grandchildren Keesha, Treesha, Kevin, Nicole, Payge, Brendon, Jered, Lauren, and Shashi. great-grandchildren: Aniyah, Cierrah, Judith-Grace and a host of nieces and nephews.
