Martin (Dick) R. Leidig
Dick Leidig passed away after a long illness on May 25, 2013. Dick was born on November 21, 1925 in Akron, Ohio and was a lifelong resident. Mr. Leidig was preceded in death by his parents, Martin O. and Goldie G. (Tate) Leidig; sister, Gail Diener; and grandson, Ryan S. Moore. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 62 years, Bonnie J. (Lewis-Cunningham) Leidig; daughters, Vicky (Denny) Moore and Terry Leidig; grandchildren, Christopher Leidig, Jason Moore, Shannon Sales; and great-granddaughters, Brianna and Britny Sales.
Mr. Leidig was a decorated Purple Heart veteran of WWII. He retired from Goodyear with 43 years of service. He was an Akron Police Reserve Officer for over 30 years. He was an auxiliary policeman for 17 years for the Tallmadge Police Department. He was a 33 degree Mason and a member of the American Legion Post 209.
Mr. Leidig was the founder of the Greater Akron Volleyball Officials Association and the Greater Akron Soccer Officials Association. He was an avid supporter of youth baseball in the Akron area from the 1940s to 1960s. He served as the commissioner and assigner for the Suburban League. Mr. Leidig was the past president or secretary of the following associations: Ohio Hot Stove, Summit Umpires, Volleyball Officials, Football Officials, Soccer Officials, Portage County Basketball Officials and received numerous awards: Touchdown Club Achievement Award, Summit County Hall of Fame Palich Award, and OHSAA Officials Hall of Fame, Summit Umpires Hall of Fame and the Greater Akron Baseball Hall of Fame. Mr. Leidig was instrumental in writing the rulebook for high school soccer players in Elgin, IL.
Family and friends may call on Thursday, May 30 from 4-8 p.m. at NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 131 N. Canton Rd., where funeral services will be held on Friday at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor John Beers officiating. Interment at Hillside Memorial Park.
