Mary E. Baker
Mary E. Baker, 98, longtime resident of Suffield, passed away on February 10, 2010 at KentRidge at Golden Pond. She was born March 8, 1911 in Akron to the late Charles E. and Laura (Shenkel) Brown. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Frank S. and William S. Brown, and in 1995, by her husband of 62 years, Arlus R. Baker. Mary was a great spirit, a beloved teacher, mentor and friend. She graduated from East High School in Akron, the University of Akron, and, later, from Kent State University with a master's degree in library science. In 1949 she began teaching at Suffield High School and set up the libraries in Field Middle and Field High School, retiring in 1974. She volunteered in many areas, especially in her church where she set up the church library. In 2009 she was honored by the Church and Synagogue Library Association as librarian of the year. Mary is survived by 3 children, 9 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, a sister-in-law (Eloise Brown), and several nieces and nephews. Her daughter, Judith C. (Gino) Calcei and their family - Steven (Lori) Calcei, Thomas (Kylie) Calcei, and Bethany (Mark) Hudson - live in Suffield Township. Her sons, David B. (Margaret) Baker and James E. (Jocelyn) Baker live in Tiffin, Ohio and Manhattan, Kansas, respectively. Dave's children - Sarah (Eric) Jome, Mark (Patsy) Baker, and Susan (Robert) Cramer - live in Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin with their families. Jim's children - Janet, Charles, and Judith Baker - live in Virginia, Maryland, and Montana. She also leaves great-grandchildren, Randi, Emily, Ashley, Alicia, Allison, Anika, Abbie, Mia, Daniel, Andrew, Maggie, Tommy, Johnny, Bergen, Brian, Robert, Bailey, Sydney and great-great-grandchildren, Sophia and Vivian. Special thanks to the caring staff of KentRidge at Golden Pond, Dr. Michael W. Rich, Hospice of Summa, and Pastor Rob. The Newcomer Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements. Calling hours will be Friday, March 5th from 4-7 p.m. at the Suffield United Church of Christ, 1115 State Route 43. A Memorial Service will be held March 6th at 11:00 a.m. at the Suffield United Church of Christ, with Rev. Earl "Rob" Roberts officiating. Memorials may be made to the church. Interment will be in the East Akron Cemetery at a later date.
