Mary P. Simmons
Mary P. Simmons, 89, passed away February 3, 2011. Born in Canton, Ohio on June 2, 1921 to Argy P. and Ida H. Pickle, she was an Akron resident until 1986. At that time she and her husband, Nelson, moved to Thonotasassa, FL. They lived there until Nelson died in 1992. Mary moved back to Akron in 1993 for the remainder of her life.
Mary was a graduate of East High School in January of 1941. She worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, Akron General Medical Center, Creme Lure and Quickey Manufacturing Co. She was also a long-time interpreter for the deaf, being very active and respected in that community. Because of her volunteerism, she was twice nominated for Woman of the Year. She was a former member of The Chapel.
She was a member of Ellestar Eastern Star. She liked to crochet, sew, and embroider. Mary had a passion to help others and will be deeply missed by all who knew her. A loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt will be remembered for her unselfish love and kindness.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Nelson; her parents, Argy and Ida Pickle; and her infant sister, Clara Nancy. She is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Janeena Simmons; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Russ Murphy; grandsons, Scott (Barb) Simmons, Shawn (Wendy) Simmons, and Russ (Michelle) Murphy III; granddaughters, Shannon (Jon) Roach and Kelleigh (Matt) Allen; great-grandchildren, Chloe Simmons and her little sister, Fu Rong in China, Aidan and Avery Roach, Madeline, Emmaleigh and Jacob Allen; sisters, Josephine Swartz, Jacqueline Moffitt; brothers, Milton (Lee) and Argy (Shirley) Pickle; and a host of nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff at Heather Knoll Retirement Village and Hospice of Summa for their tender, loving care.
Family and friends may call on Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. and Wednesday from 10-11 a.m. followed by an 11 a.m. funeral service with Rev. Michael Shaub officiating at NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 131 N. Canton Rd. Interment at Hillside Memorial Park. The family requests memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Summa.
