Murrel Johnson, 69, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on August 2, 2018. A longtime Akron resident, he was one of nine children born to late parents Louis and Clara Bell Johnson, on July 12, 1949 in Lake Providence, LA. Murrel worked as a Local #17 Ironworker for many years alongside his brothers, later to begin a career as a millwright with General Motors. He served in the US Army during the Vietnam War. His family was the most important part of his life.
In addition to his parents, Murrel is preceded in death by his wife, Laura Johnson; siblings, Junior Johnson, Wayne Johnson, Nettie Good; and nephews, Jerry, little Vince, Paul, Mark, Johnny. He is survived by his daughters, Christine Johnson, Jeanenne (Mark Cheney) Ropp; step-daughter, Amy McBryer; grandchildren, Cody and Mack Muhlhan, Brittney Johnson, Ashlee (Dennis) Johnson, Brody Ropp, Whitney and Mason McBryer; great-grandchildren, Kein and Alea; siblings, John (Bonnie) Johnson, Ed Johnson, Ray (Patty) Johnson, Nora Abbott, Evelyn (Sheldon) Shepherd; great-niece, Juanita Johnson (Landon and Leah); and loved by many other family and friends.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 5, 2018 from 2-5pm at Newcomer Funeral Home, 131 N. Canton Rd., Akron. Funeral service will take place at 11am on Monday, August 6, 2018 at Firestone United Methodist Church, 250 N. Firestone Blvd, Akron, with visitation from 10-11am. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery, Akron to follow.
