Myrtle DeLong
Myrtle DeLong, daughter of William and Mary Penix Swain, was born in Martin County, Kentucky on September 15, 1917. She passed away on July 27, 2010, at the age of 92 and 10 months. She is survived by son, Randel G. DeLong (Marilyn) of North Canton, Ohio; two grandchildren, Brent W. DeLong of North Canton and Shannon (Justin) Parker of Hartville, Ohio; and great-grandson, Justin Parker, Jr. She was preceded in death by husband, Edgar DeLong; three sisters, Carrie Conley, Ethel Meek, and Elizabeth Swain (infant), and four brothers, Irvin, Melvin, Russell, and Laffayette Swain. She is survived by several nieces and nephews, Drs. Cecil Conley (Naomi) of Florida, Opal Day, Imogene Sheridan, Mary Louise (Palmer) Hall, and Phyliss Swain, of Ohio, Irene Mollett, Yvonne Hogue, Mandy Sue Dutton (Walter), Melvin Doyle Swain, Betty Rediford (Johnny), and Peggy Osborne of Kentucky, Carrie Lee(David)Loudin and Roger Meek (Susan) of South Carolina. Myrtle moved from Tomahawk, KY to Suffield, OH in 1951. She worked at Goodyear in Akron, Ohio during World War II as a parts inspector on aircraft. She was especially proud of the fact that she had inspected the parts to the B-29 bomber that dropped the bomb in Japanese territory which ended the war. Myrtle was a professional seamstress and sewed for Euclid Manufacturing Company in Kent, Ohio. She loved sewing for family and friends. She worked at Sunshine Biscuit in Dayton, Ohio and retired in 1978 from the Lawson Consolidated Foods Company in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. She spent most of her retirement years in Suffield and Hartville, Ohio. Myrtle was a devoted member of Kent Freewill Baptist Church. Until the age of 91 she enjoyed growing vegetables in her garden for herself and her neighbors. She moved from North Canton, Ohio to West Union, Ohio in 2008 to live with her niece, Opal Day. Myrtle's kind and loving personality was her greatest asset. She loved to help others who were less fortunate than she was in every way she could. Myrtle will be sadly missed by her many friends and loved ones. Visitation will be Friday, July 30th from 12-2 p.m. followed by a 2 p.m. funeral service officiated by Brother Ferlie Yates at NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 131 N. Canton Rd. Interment at East Nimishillen Church of the Brethren Cemetery.
