Norma Jean Jacobs (Sister Ruth Marie)
After battling cancer for more than ten years, Sr. Ruth Marie Jacobs (Norma Jean) of Silver Lake was gracefully and peacefully called to sit with Jesus. She was born in Akron, Ohio and lived in the area most of her life. She was a talented seamstress by trade, as well as a teacher and caregiver to many. Norma Jean was an avid reader but her two loves were teaching and making dolls. She also enjoyed the many years she shared her time as a volunteer at Barberton Hospital and she always paid special attention to the little things that would make someone else happy. During her long battle, Norma Jean donated herself to cancer research; the causes and possible cures. She took comfort in knowing that by donating her body to science, she could one day prevent cancer in others. Norma Jean was professed into the order of Saint Francis in 2003 and dedicated her life to the Lord as a St. Franciscan Nun. Preceded in death by her husband Joe in 1969, she leaves to grieve her passing with the comfort of knowing she is now happy, healthy, and in a better place, her brothers and sisters of the Community of the Crucified One; spiritual leaders Bishop Eddie, Father Peo and his dear wife Lucy; her devoted home care helper Corrine Young; children Joe, of Akron, Dorothy Joan, of Talent, Oregon, Vivian Jean (Tim) Rafferty, of Barberton, and Kenneth, of Connecticut; grandchildren William, Katherine, Catherine Diane, Kaylen, Kimberly, Timothy, and Samuel; great-granddaughter Kaia; 1 great-great-grandson; and her forever faithful canine companion Chrissy. The family would like to thank doctors Sandra Hazra and Freeland Oliverio for their many years of care, concern, and emotional support. We would also like to thank her hospice nurse Katie Griffith of VNS as well as the entire staff of the Hospice Care Center. Before burial, Sister Ruth (Norma Jean) will lay in state at the Mother House of the Sacred Heart Prayer Community after which she will be buried in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Conneautville, Pennsylvania. A private memorial service will be held for the family. At Sister Ruth's request, there will be no open calling hours. Please make donations in her name to the Community of the Crucified One, 107 E. 11th Ave., Homestead, PA 15120 or to the VNS Hospice, 3358 Ridgewood Rd., Akron, OH 44333 to be used to update nursing and patient equipment within the Hospice Care Center.
