Opal Nina Thornton
Opal Nina Thornton, 95, of Uniontown, passed away May 5, 2007. Opal was born April 29, 1912 in Flatwoods, West Virginia. She moved to Akron as a young girl and lived in the area her entire life. She was an active member of the Goodyear Heights Baptist Church since 1949 and a member of the church's Loyal Daughters. She will always be remembered as a devoted wife and mother, and a loving grandmother. Opal's kindness touched the lives and hearts of many who knew her. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 48 years, Lawrence F. Thornton; son, Lawrence F. Thornton, Jr.; and granddaughters, Verine Nutter and Cerine Haden. She is survived by her daughter, Beulah (Bob) Swope and her son, James (Pauline) Thornton; grandchildren, Dale (Tammy) Swope, Richard Thornton, Larry Fletcher (Mary) Thornton, Mary Ann Tomasik, Matthew (Alicia) Thornton, Leah (Michael) Thornton-McGovern; great-grandchildren, Melissa, Amanda, Rebecca, and Erica Swope, Rachel and Stacey Haden, Stephen and Ryan Nutter, Lisa, Sarah, April Nina, and Julie Thornton, Alyssia Kellermier, Alisha Delasandro, and Laila Thornton-Diaz. Family and friends may call on Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 131 N. Canton Rd. Funeral services at 11:00 a.m. with visitation from 10:00-11:00 a.m. on Thursday at Goodyear Heights Baptist Church, 1767 Goodyear Blvd., with Pastor John Phillips officiating. Interment at Hillside Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts in Opal's name be made to Goodyear Heights Baptist Church.
