Rathatis T. Calhoun

Rathatis "Ray" Calhoun Sr., 70, of Streetsboro, Ohio, passed away on Thursday, February 2, 2023 at Arbors of Streetsboro in Streetsboro, Ohio.

Ray was born on September 9, 1952 in Little Rock, Arkansas to Herman and Dorothy Calhoun. Ray was one of ten children born of this union. Ray moved to Cleveland, Ohio and also made homes in Akron, Ravenna and Warren, Ohio for many years.

Ray joined the United States Marine Corps in 1971. He was a self-employed auto mechanic. Ray was a member of the First Baptist Church of Braceville (Braceville, Ohio). Ray was musically inclined. He was a great singer and played a variety of musical instruments. The piano was his favorite. Ray was a member of the The Golden Wonders and a musician for several area churches. In his earlier years, Ray was a member of many bands including "Jump Street" and "The Perry's."

Ray is preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Dorothy Calhoun; brothers, Sonny and Charles; sisters-in-law, Cathy and Otto Marie; niece, Ralena; and nephew, Darryl.

Loved ones left to cherish Ray's memory include his son, Rathatis "Ray Jr." of Akron, Ohio; daughter, Novella (Rayshon) Dent of Streetsboro, Ohio; three grandchildren, Rayshon Jr., Tahj and Ahsunte; three great-grandchildren, Ryleigh, Payton and Sharief; siblings, Thaniel of Ravenna, Ohio, Melvin of Warren, Ohio, Forrest of Akron, Ohio, Jean of Ravenna, Ohio, Ronnie (Sharon) of Warren, Ohio, Ricky of Ravenna, Ohio and Beverly (Alvin) Clark of Ravenna, Ohio; as well as a host of cherished friends, family and loved ones.

Visitation will be held at Newcomer Funeral Home (131 N. Canton Rd., Akron, Ohio) on Saturday, February 25, 2023 from 11:00am - 12:00pm with a funeral service to follow at 12:00pm.
