Rev. James E. Abernathy, Sr., 73, of Hartville, went home to be with the Lord on November 13, 2001. He was born August 24, 1928 in Akron, Ohio to the late Burgan & Mary (Allen) Abernathy. He was an elder of Harvestime Temple in Hartville and he was known as a man who never met a stranger. Everyone knew him as "Grandpa." Preceded in death by his wife, Bettye L. Abernathy on November 11, 2000; sister Frances O'Neal; brother Rev. Charles Abernathy. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Linda & Rev. Raymond Smith II of N. Canton; sons and daughters-in-law, Rev. James E. & Judith Abernathy II of Schamburg IL, Rev. Michael & Karen Abernathy of N. Canton; Stephen R. & Gail Abernathy of PA; sisters Marie Taylor of Titusville FL, Barbara Melonas of Canton NY; brothers Donald B. Abernathy of Goodlettsville TN, Thomas Abernathy of Spokane WA; 8 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Friends may call Monday from 5 - 8 p.m. at NEWCOMER-FARLEY FUNERAL HOME where funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Raymond Smith officiating.
