Richard H. Lenke, 91, went to heaven to be reunited with his wife, Alberta, on April 12, 2016. Born in Akron, Ohio, to Henry and Helene Lenke, he was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and brother.
Dick proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II as a Machinist Mate Second Class on the LST 494 at Normandy on D-Day and also served on the USS Patroclus in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of the LST 494 Association and a LST 494 plank owner. His time in the Navy instilled in him a life-long love of the sea.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Alberta, who was his childhood sweetheart; his parents, Henry and Helene Lenke; and his favorite uncle, Leonard Anthony.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah and Eugene Hamilton, Kathleen and Jeffery Peters, Constance Lenke, Rebecca and Rick Jenkins; his beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his sister, Marjorie Lynch; his sister-in-law, Maurelle Christman; many nieces and nephews; special neighbors, Luanne and Eric Pirogowicz; and his faithful dog, Cinnamon.
Calling hours will be Sunday, April 17, 2016 from 3-6 p.m. at NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 131 N. Canton Rd., Akron.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 164 W. Market St., Akron. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery with military honors.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to all the caring staff of the AGMC VNS and the Hospice of VNS, and the doctors, nurses and staff at AGMC for the compassionate care given to their father.
