Richard L. "Gunny" Thomas, age 84, resident of Cuyahoga Falls, OH, passed away February 6, 2013. He was born June 25, 1928 to the late Clarence and Marybell Thomas. Served in the US Marine Corp during WWII and Korean War. Life member of Marine Corp League, DAV, 40 & 8, VFW and American Legion posts of Cuyahoga Falls. He was the first 'Veteran of the Year' and a past 'Citizen of the Year.' Awarded many veterans' honors, was a recipient of 'Achievement Award' from Toys for Tots and honored by City of Cuyahoga Falls mayor proclamation of "Richard L. Thomas Day" of Nov. 10th. Past commander MCL, Past First Vice Commander DAV and founder of MCL Rose Drive.
Preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Jeffy Thomas. Survived by 4 daughters, Marsha (Bob) McClelland, Vicky Thomas, Toni Moore and Violet (Fabian) Weatherholt; 12 grandchildren, Michael, Billy, Brett, Tommy, Stephen, Jennifer, Fabian II, Christopher, Joshua, Mitch, Nicole and Whitney; numerous great grandchildren and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Friends may call 5:00 to 8:00 PM, Monday, Feb. 11, 2013 at NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 131 N. Canton Rd, Akron, OH 44305. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013 at the funeral home. Final resting place will be at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman.
