On the evening of Friday, October 27, 2023, Richard O. Michael closed his eyes and reopened them in the loving arms of God.
Born in Akron to parents, Clarence and Olive, Richard went on to the University of Colorado, where he obtained his PhD in Organic Chemistry, later working for Temple University.
Known in the Akron/Hartville area as "The Can Man", Richard forged many friendships on his daily can collecting routes; the best being his cat, Blackie. Also holding a special place in his heart was the congregation of Wedgewood United Methodist Church in Ellet. Richard was very appreciative of the help and companionship they provided him over the last several years.
An avid reader and lifelong learner, Richard held a distinct love for America's Old Steam Engine Trains. He often spoke of his dream to ride cross country on giant steel locomotive.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law, Robert W. and Evelyn P. Michael. Richard is survived by nephews, Ron Michael, Jeff (Sherri) Michael and caregiver/friend, Tangela Smith.
"Dearest Richard, Over 20 years ago you walked into my life and changed it for the better. I will never forget your helping me with my chemistry homework, complaining that my family dinners were too loud, your stringing wire throughout my house to accommodate your Ham radio, your meticulous keeping of weather/barometer readings, our one sided religious/political debates, your love for your cat and your blinding short-shorts. Mostly I will miss your weekly letters and your always smiling face. You are the smartest man I've ever known - also kind, gentle and accepting".
My heart is warm with the friends I make and better friends I'll not be knowing. Yet, there isn't a train I wouldn't take, no matter where its going.
-Edna St. Vincent Millay.
"Enjoy your eternal ride, my friend. We'll see you when we get there. Much love - T".
Cremation has taken place. A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family. Rev. Joe Burkhardt to officiate.
