Richard M. Smetts

TALLMADGE--Richard M. Smetts (Dick, aka Oscar the Grouch), 78, passed away on Sunday, May 21, 2006, surrounded by his loving family. He was a veteran of the Korean War. Richard was well known in and around the business community, and "was the best damn mechanic around." Richard is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 52 years, Carlene; six children, Tom (June), Larry (Debbie), Richard (Tina), Debbie (Dave) Watson, Cheryl Teter, and Connie Smetts; 14 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; his brother Robert (Alicia); and his loving dog Brown Sugar. He leaves to his children a strong work ethic and that family is most important and stronger together as a unit. A man that didn't mix words when he had a point to make and never messed up on a punchline of a joke. Calling hours will be Wednesday 5 to 8 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 131 N. Canton Rd., Akron. Private funeral service will be held on Thursday. Online condolences may be made at www.Newcomerfamily.com.
