Richard J. Szwarc, 74, of Rootstown, passed away of gastro-esophageal cancer on Saturday, February 6, 2021, at home with his family by his side. He was born to parents John and Mary Szwarc on September 5, 1946 in Hagen, Germany.
Preceding him in death are his mother, Mary; son, Jonathan; and mother-in-law, Elizabeth.
Richard will remain forever in the hearts of his loving wife of 51 years, JoAnne Szwarc; daughter, Lisa Ludovico, and son, Shannon Szwarc; father, John; sister, Amelia (John) Ferritto; brother-in-law, Donald Huff; and his beloved dog, Molly.
Richard honored his country by serving as a United States Marine in Vietnam where he earned two Purple Hearts. Richard retired from General Motors in Lordstown after 30 years of service. He and his wife, JoAnne, were the first husband and wife to graduate from the Akron School of Practical Nursing.
Richard enjoyed spending time going to garage sales with his wife, JoAnne; cooking and discovering new restaurants with his daughter, Lisa; camping and hiking in Acadia National Park with his son, Shannon; fishing on Springfield Lake with his brother-in-law, Don; going on lengthy walks with his loyal companion, Molly; and using his artistic talents to create furniture and one-of-a-kind wood-turned pieces of art for his family. He made friends wherever he went and will be missed by all who knew him.
The family extends their deepest thanks to their family, friends, and fellow parishioners at St. Peter of the Fields for their constant support and prayers. They are also grateful for the physicians and staff at the Cooper Cancer Center and Summa Hospice.
