A great member of the greatest generation went to his reward on February 21, 2012, after a life well lived.
Bob was born on July 16, 1922 in Zanesville, Ohio to Stewart and Leona as the middle of what would be three boys. After high school, Bob enrolled at Ohio State. WW II postponed school and Bob enlisted in the U.S. Army. Assigned to Artillery, he volunteered for the Army Air Corps after deciding flying over mud was better than marching through it. Bob flew on 16 combat missions from Saipan as a B-29 Blister Gunner (once making an emergency landing on Iwo Jima while the Marines and Japanese were still fighting). Bob returned to civilian life and Ohio State, graduating with a Business degree and starting a long career in sales. His sales technique was based on building relationships and many customers became lifelong friends.
In February 1954, after a whirlwind courtship Bob married Margie (Bittner), the love of his life, and together they embarked on their great adventure. The journey ultimately included a son Bob (Sue), daughter Terrie (Bob Newland) and two grandchildren, Chelsea and Scott, who were his pride and joy.
Bob will be welcomed home by his parents and his in-laws, his brother and best friend Roy, sister-in-law Loujuana, and brother Bill; brothers-in-law Buzz, Bill and Chuck and sister-in-law Louise; several nieces and nephews and too many friends. Here to celebrate his life are his wife, children and grandchildren; brothers-in law Tom, C.C. and Denny; sisters-in-law Katherine, Virginia, Shirley, Janice, Cindy and Joanne; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
We have no doubt that Jesus is welcoming him with open arms and the words, "Well done, Bob. Now rest with me." Many thanks to the wonderful caregivers from VNS. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to Hospice of VNS, 3358 Ridgewood Rd., Akron, OH 44333.
Thank you, Dad. O-H-I-O!
Family and friends may call on Saturday, February 25 from 2-4:30 at Newcomer Funeral Home, 131 N. Canton Rd., where funeral services will follow at 4:30 with Rev. Ed Perkinson officiating.
