Robert Paul Weigel, 87, passed away July 1, 2011, after a brief illness. Robert was born March 5, 1924, in Akron, to Paul G. and Wallie (Schratzenstaller) Weigel. He grew up in South Akron where he attended Goodrich Elementary School and graduated from Akron South High School in 1941. He worked briefly for Acme Grocery, and then travelled to California where he worked for the Postal Service in Covina. While in California, he joined the Navy, serving as a gunner's mate on the U.S.S. Guest, being active in the South Pacific during World War II. On November 25, 1944, while home on two weeks leave, he married his sweetheart , the former Violet C. Weaver. After his discharge from the Navy, Robert worked for two weeks at Goodrich Rubber Company, and then was hired at Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, where he worked as a machinist for 41 years, retiring in 1986. While at Firestone, he was affectionately known as "Ace" among his co-workers. Robert was an active member of Faith E.U.B. Methodist Church, a member of the Fred Reese Post V.F.W. and of the Firestone Credit Union. He enjoyed hiking, golf, vacationing with his family and deep-sea fishing with his work buddies. Robert was proceeded in death by his parents; brother-in-law, Dave McComb; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Anna and John McPherson; daughter-in-law, Kathy Weigel and nieces, Beverly Uren and Barbara McPherson. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Violet; sister, Doris Jean McComb of Poland, OH; son, James P. Weigel of Albertville, AL; daughter, Kathie Weigel of Akron; former daughter-in-law Betty Meidlein of Akron; nephew Robert McPherson of Akron; grandchildren Dean (Michelle) Weigel of Garfield Heights, OH, Peter Weigel of Akron, Tina (Anthony) Walden and Jimmy (Carrie) Weigel of Albertville, AL; grand-nephews, David, Devin, William and David Jr.; five great-grandchildren, Zachery, David, A.J., Tyler and Landen. The family would like to thank the staff at Essex of Tallmadge for their special care of Robert during his years there.
Family and friends may visit on Tuesday, from 5-8 PM at NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 131 N. Canton Rd., where funeral services will be held Wednesday at 12:00 noon at Newcomer Funeral Home, with Rev. Carol McCartney officiating. Interment at Hillside Memorial Park.
