Dad was a very hard worker and always provided for his family. His time in the Navy, in which he was honorably discharged, provided lasting memories from traveling, learning some discipline and getting into a little trouble, a time or two. But once he met June, his life became based on providing a stable and loving life for his wife and kids. He was a great father, however, once his grandchildren started to arrive, he became an even greater grandfather. He couldn't believe it that he lived to see not just one, but ten great grandchildren, who he loved being around most of all. You could always see the pride when looking at his whole family, knowing that just two people created perfection. He was so involved with his children's/grandchildren's lives and sports. He not only coached, but attended countless sporting events - no matter what the event from baseball, football, soccer, karate, gymnastics, wrestling, softball, bowling or band shows. He was an avid lover of Green Football, Ellet Softball, and Rootstown Softball. He impacted so many sports communities and their families throughout the years. He was also very creative in giving grief to coaches and umpires, especially with his cowbell, blow horn, and feisty words. He also was a die-hard Cleveland sports fan.
Don was the life of the party and always put a smile on everyone's face. He loved to cracks jokes, pull pranks, and flirt with the ladies. These skills were all passed down to his children and grandchildren. Dad not only let all the kids color his tattoos, but went as far as getting his nails, hair and face done up. He had a wide variety of taste in music and was very influential to all of us by introducing many different genres. He sure knew how to "Boogie".
We will forever remember the good, the bad, and the "ugly" (like his grudges!). But one thing we can say about this man is that we all have a "Dad" or "Grandpa Riley" story. This is the life he envisioned and set out to create, and he succeeded! We were all so blessed to have him as a role model in our life. He would have loved to provide even more memories and moments with us, but is home with the love of his life is where he started this crazy journey.
All services are private and all arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Newcomer Funeral Home, Akron.
Don will be laid to rest with his wife in Hillside Memorial Park, Akron.
