Roland Stewart
Roland Alan Stewart – 81 – was given his wings on July 27, 2010. Born in Hughes Creek, WV on August 12, 1928 to parents Amisa and Dorothy (Pettry), he was the eldest of four children. Married in 1954, he moved his young family to Akron in 1955 for employment opportunities. He worked for the Diamond Match Co., before retiring with AMHA with 32 years of service, in 1992. He was very proud to be the first recipient of a merit award and banquet in his honor with the company. He returned to work in 1993, and worked for ACME Grocery, retiring again after 9 years. He enjoyed fishing on Mogadore Lake,0 and over the years accumulated quite a collection of fish Ohio pins. He was also an avid sports fan; especially the Indians. He was a great storyteller, who never met a stranger. Preceded in death by son, William (Billy) and daughter, Norma, parents and siblings, Fess, Dorothea and Phyliss, he is survived by ex-wife, Zelma, son Robert of Akron, daughters, Barbara (Tony) Tomin of Green, Angie (Mike) Bechter of Ravenna, Linda Suncire of Chandler, AZ and Diana (Kenny) Oles of Akron. He also leaves behind 17 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, special friend Marie Eslinger and many nieces, nephews and friends. "We were blessed to have you as our Dad, and thankful for the times we shared ~ We will miss you, and love you, and keep you in our hearts always." Calling hours will be held Friday, July 30, from 6 to 8 pm at Newcomer Funeral Home, 131 N. Canton Rd., Akron, where a service will be held on Saturday, July 31, at 12 noon with a visitation 1 hour prior. Rev. Fleary Spurlock to officiate the funeral. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery.
