Shirley Rebecca (Hood) Cox was born August 22, 1928 to Virginia Harris and Orrin Perrin. Shirley passed away on February 13, 2013 at her home, surrounded by family and friends.
Shirley married James W. "Jack" Cox, Sr. in 1960. Her passions were helping people, feeding the hungry, and loving her family. She raised her family in Akron. She also loved traveling, going to yard sales, flea markets, and watching animals. Shirley was a volunteer for Good Samaritan Hunger Center starting in 1988. She was honored and received many awards including: Older American Volunteer Award, United Way of Summit County Volunteer of the Week in "1991", and J.C. Penney Golden Rule Award in 1994. Shirley was the first female cab driver for the Yellow Cab Company in the Rubber City.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James Cox, Sr.; and daughter, Yvonne J. (Hood) Vickers.
Shirley's memory will be carried on by her sister, Deatta Bosley, of Ashland, OH; her loving children, Vickie J. Ward, Yolanda L. Walker, Jackie Y. Favors, all of Akron, Donald L. (Mary) Hood, of Cheektowaga, NY, James W. (Karen) Cox, Jr., of Akron, and grandson whom she raised, Chief Warrant Officer 2 James D. Hood, of Ft. Stewart, GA; her 21 grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren; special friends, Hazel Palms, James R. Ashford, and David Johnson; and a host of other family members and friends.
A private cremation service has taken place at Shirley's request. A special Birthday/Home Going celebration will be held on Thursday, August 22, 2013 at Northlawn Memorial Gardens.
