Spencer E. Woodill, Sr.
Spencer E. Woodill, Sr., 88, of Akron, passed away November 23, 2004 at Akron General Medical Center. He was born January 28, 1916 in Hartford, Connecticut to the late Frances C. & Elnetta S. (Briggs) Woodill. Spencer has been a resident of Akron for over 50 years; was a veteran of WWII serving in the U.S. Army and later retired from the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. He is a former semi-pro baseball player with the Pirates and Cardinals organizations and is a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. He was a member of Annunciation Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society, Knights of Columbus Council 4664 and was an avid golfer and bowler. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Richard S. Woodill; and brothers, Ellsworth and Austin Woodill. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Anna H. (Billisits) of Akron; daughter, Anne H. Metz of Akron; son, Spencer E. (Darlene) II of Akron; grandchildren, Thomas, Robert, Leslie, Richard and Marianne; 11 great-grandchildren; brother, Edward Woodill of Pittsburgh PA. Funeral Mass will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Annunciation Catholic Church. Family and friends may call at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the mass begins. Private interment will take place at Hillside Memorial Park.
