Steve Tepfenhart, 88, of Atwater, Ohio, passed away September 25, 2009. Born in Akron, December 15, 1920, he lived in the area all his life. Survived by daughters, Sharon (O'Dell) Legg and Kathy (Tepfenhart) Quiros (Nacho); sister, Frances Dennis; brother, Joseph Tepfenhart; grandchildren, Karen (Legg) Clemens, Bernard (Buzzy) Legg and Clint Quiros; great-grandchildren, Alexandrea Clemens, Breanna Clemens and Miranda Legg; nieces, Randi (Dennis) Saul (Mike) and Julie (Dennis) Hisey (Melvin); great-nieces, Amanda and Rebecca Saul; great-nephew, Jonathan Hisey. Preceded in death by wife, Ruth (Butler-O'Dell) Tepfenhart; parents, Steve & Frances Tepfenhart; sister-in-law, Stephanie (Kassak) Tepfenhart; brother-in-law, Floyd Dennis; son-in-law, Bernard (Vince) Legg. Steve served in WWII as Staff Sergeant in the 24th Infantry Division – 19th Infantry Regiment – 2nd Battalion – Company H – heavy weapons. He participated in major campaigns in the SW Pacific and Philippine Islands, Mindoro, New Guinea, Leyte, Luzon and Mindanao. Steve received numerous commendations; 3 Purple Hearts, 5 Campaign Bronze Stars – Presidential Unit Citation. He was severely wounded near Davao City, Mindanao five weeks prior to the Japanese surrender. He returned to Percy Jones Field Military Hospital prior to his discharge on October 12, 1945. Steve graduated from Hower Vocational High School in 1939. In 1946 he began work for Shorty Fulton at Akron Municipal Airport and retired as Field Maintenance Manager after 35 years of service. Steve's hobbies included auto mechanics, midget cars and motorcycles. A special thanks to the staff at Akron General Medical Center, Edwin Shaw and Hospice Care Center of Fairlawn and Dorothy Hanaman for their care and support. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 7 – 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 1 – 2 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 131 N. Canton Rd., Akron, where services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Fleary Spurlock officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Memorial Park.
