Valerie R. Baxter (Douglas)
Visitation with family and friends to celebrate the life of Valerie R. Baxter, 73, will be held Friday, August 16, 4p-7p with service immediately following calling hours at Newcomer Funeral Home, 131 N. Canton Rd. Akron, Oh. 44305.
Valerie passed away Tuesday, August 13 at Hospice Care Center in Copley after complications relating to chemotherapy. Born October 3, 1939 in Akron to Henry and Veronica Douglas of Lakemore. She graduated from Springfield High School in 1957. Valerie went on to graduate from Akron General Medical School of Nursing and later in life from the University of Akron. She was a true caregiver, working in the hospice field most of the time. Later in life she went back to school and received her Accounting degree, passing the CPA exam on the first try! We are so proud of her, she never stopped learning. Mom embraced technology of every sort and kind, teaching family along the way. She was the total package!!
Preceded in death by her parents and husband, Dr. Robert H. Baxter, she is survived by her children: Lisa Edwards, Lynn Mace, Laurie Mace and Don (Kim) Mace; stepchildren Milena (Keith) Horn, Debra Mary (Joe) Pounder, Rob Baxter; sisters Barbara Larsen and Kathy (Jeff) St. Clair; grandchildren including: Jessica, Matt, Lindsey, Abby, Zach, Paige, Tyler, greatgrandchildren Marissa and Macey, and beloved nieces and nephews.
Very special thanks go to cousin Eileen and dear friend Jeanie for all their love and support. We would also like to thank all those who helped care for her during this difficult time. You rock!
Val was an animal lover. She was practical and would tell you to make a donation in lieu of flowers. Her favorite was: One of a Kind Pet Rescue, 1929 West Market St. Akron, Oh. 44313. This is where she found her constant companion Sophie. She also loved gardening and butterflies and we're going to plant butterfly bushes honoring her legacy.
