Vera L. Van Meter, age 94, of Stow, Ohio passed away on September 16, 2020. Vera was born in Monroe County, Ohio, to parents John and Jennie (Wheeler) Weber.
Vera enjoyed her early years growing up in a small town as she shared life with her 11 siblings. In the early forties, she moved into the Akron area where she worked as a telephone operator and then at Goodyear as a riveter during World War II. But most of her life she worked as a waitress. First, at the Tallmadge Buffet and then later at the Holiday Inn of Brimfield. After marrying and having three children, Ken, Judy and Larry, it was clear that they needed more room so they decided to move to Brimfield where she would reside for the next 60 years. After the death of her first husband, at the age of 65, she married William Van Meter. They were married in Hawaii. With that she also gained the love and support of two step son's, Keith and Mark and their families. She treasured spending time with her family and her pets. For many years Vera attended the Faith United Methodist Church of Brimfield with her husband. Vera also enjoyed assisting others as a volunteer working at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna for almost 20 years. As William and Vera grew older they moved into assisted living at the Landing of Stow. With the continued support from their families and the loving support of the staff she was able to enjoy spending time with the many kind residents in that community. Vera's long life ended peacefully as she fell asleep in death in the early morning hours of Wednesday September 16th, 2020.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by husbands, William Van Meter and Richard Shreffler; and ten siblings.
She will be sadly missed by children, Ken (Elisabeth) Shreffler, Judy Shreffler-Horan (Greg), Larry (Deborah) Shreffler; grandchildren, Becky (Chris), Bridget (Todd), Scott, Timothy (Danielle), Lindsey, Kara, Matthew; great grandchildren Lydia, Luke, Ethan, Olivia; sister, Eileen (Dave) Cline; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Vera's family extends their deep gratitude to the caring staff of the Landing of Stow. A private graveside service will take place at Standing Rock Cemetery in Kent. A memorial service will be held using ZOOM video conferencing on Sunday, September 27, 2020 at 4:00 PM EST. Those who wish may make memorial donations in Vera's name to the Portage Animal Protective League.
