Viola Maria Fischer died peacefully at home in the early morning hours of Sunday, July 28, 2019, at the age of 83.
She was born April 23, 1936, in Gomorpanyit, Hungary to Geza and Maria Kovacs. She and her family were forced to flee Hungary in 1944, eventually immigrating to America in the spring of 1950.
Vi tragically suffered the loss of both her parents to cancer in the final year of her studies at St. Mary's College, Notre Dame, Indiana. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and Theology in 1957.
She became a social worker in the child welfare departments of St. Joseph's County, Indiana and The Roman Catholic Diocese of Ogdensburg, New York where she worked until she was married.
Vi married Harvey Alger Fischer, an airline pilot, on August 19, 1961. She was a devoted and loving mother of two sons, Mark Harvey, born 1962 and Kurt Leonard, born 1964.
She was a loving, thoughtful and doting grandmother to Mark and wife Martha's 6 children. She was an amazing grandmother and is sorely missed. All who knew her will remember her thoughtfulness and kind generosity.
Vi was a strong woman who never complained throughout life, despite many trials. She remained physically determined and mentally alert even after a stroke claimed her independence last October.
She is survived by her brother Paul Kovacs; her sons Mark (Martha), and Kurt; her grandchildren Mark Jr., Sr. Maria Goretti CMD, Evan, Isabella, Louisa, and Helena Fischer; her niece Margie McHugh (Frank), and nephew Steve Kovacs (Cindy).
