Violet Catherine Weigel

May 2, 1926 — August 1, 2017

Violet Catherine Weigel, age 91, passed away on August 1, 2017, at Essex of Tallmadge.

She was born on May 2, 1926, in Portage, PA, the daughter of the late James Leo and Catherine (nee Hampton) Weaver.

She was a resident of Akron for 89 years. She grew up in "Goosetown" (South Akron), where she attended Leggett Elementary School and South High School. After leaving high school she worked at a number of jobs, including Goodrich, Andrews-Alderfer, Saalfield Publishing, and Scott's 5 & 10.

She married her high school sweetheart on November 25, 1944, when he was home on leave from the Navy, and resided in South Akron for another eleven years until moving to Goodyear Heights in 1955.

Violet was a stay at home mom, and was active in the PTA for Seiberling Elementary School and enjoyed her monthly outings with her group of friends at the neighborhood "Breakfast Club". She and her husband also loved their monthly get-togethers with the "Gin Club", and hiking the Metro Parks after retirement. During the 1960s and 70s she loved to crochet and made a number of beautiful afghans that are still treasured by family. As a child, Violet attended Grace Evangelical Church on South Street and later, for many years, was a steadfast member of Faith EUB Methodist Church.

Violet was preceded death by her loving husband of 66 years, Robert Weigel; her parents, Leo and Catherine Weaver; her in-laws, Paul and Wallie Weigel; sister and brothers-in-law, Anna and Bert McPherson and David McComb; daughter-in-law, Kathy Weigel; nieces, Beverly Uren (and husband, Bill) and Barbara McPherson; and best friend, Eileen Liebman.

She is survived by her children, James Weigel of Albertville, AL, and Kathie Weigel of Akron; sister-in-law, Jean McComb of Poland, Ohio; grandchildren, Dean (Michelle) Weigel and Peter Weigel of Akron, and Jimmy (Carrie) Weigel and Tina (Anthony) Walden of Alabama; great grandchildren Zachary, David, AJ, Tyler, and Landen; former daughter-in-law, Betty Meidlein of Canton; nephew, Robert McPherson of Akron and dear friend Sally McCall of Akron.
