Walter J. Stroup
Walter J. Stroup, 86, passed away on May 11, 2013 at Ridgewood Road Hospice Center in Akron, Ohio. He was born in Akron, Ohio to Walter E. and Lillie Stroup. Walt grew up in Akron, Ohio and graduated from Garfield High School. After high school, he joined the Army Air Force during WWII and was discharged in 1947, having achieved the rank of Corporal. He began working with his father to establish the family business of Stroup and Sons Sand & Gravel. Walt then became the owner and transitioned the company from sand and gravel into conveyor belt sales when the company was renamed Stroup & Sons Ltd. Walter retired in 1997 after 50 years passing down a wealth of knowledge and his strong work ethic to his son, Walter E. Stroup.
Walt married Christine Reynolds in 1954 in Angola, Indiana and they were happily married for 58 years. They were residents of the Suffield area for the past 40 years.
Walt had a great passion for fast, beautiful cars. He was one of the original stock car racers in this area and was known as the "Mad Masked Man". Walt and Christine spent many fun years attending "cruise ins" and traveling to street rod events in one of the wonderful old street rods he owned.
Walter was preceded in death by his wife, Christine; daughter, Crystal Bohaychyk; parents, Walter E. and Lille Stroup; and brother, George Stroup.
Walter will be lovingly remembered by his son, Walter E. (Cindy) Stroup; his sisters, Millie Allison, Shirley Wilson, and Terry Walker; grandchildren, Charles "Butchie" (Amy) Bohaychyk, CJ Bohaychyk, Jason (Angela) Stroup, Michael (Jessica) Bohaychyk, Jessica (Ryan) Burgess; and his great-grandchildren and many lifelong friends.
Family and friends may call on Friday, May 17 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. at NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 131 N. Canton Rd., Akron, where funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. Walter and Christine will take their final cruise together and be laid to rest at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery on Friday, May 24. A procession will form at Newcomer Funeral Home at 9:30 a.m. and burial will take place at the cemetery at 10:30 a.m.
