WALTER EDWARD STINE (Bud) (Doc) 05/02/1927 - 10/30/2022

Walter Edward Stine, the beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, arrived in heaven on October 30, 2022. Although he was age 95.5, he left us far too soon.

Walt was born on May 2, 1927 in New Philadelphia Ohio to Fairy Dale Thompson Stine and Walter Nathan Stine. His Father was killed in a train accident in 1929, and he was sent with his older sister Ida to live with his grandmother in Deersville, Ohio, where he was raised. He attended a one room school house through the 8th grade. His home and school had no electricity, only kerosene lamps.

He graduated from Kenmore High School in 1944, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1945 at the age of 17. After basic training he attended Mississippi State Engineering College and graduated in 12 weeks. Immediately following graduation he was assigned to the USS Vulcan, a navy repair ship, and deployed to the South Pacific, the Caroline, Marshall and Philippine Islands, as well as Okinawa Japan.

Walt served in the Navy with distinction, and was a member of the Naval Blue Jackets Choir. He was the senior ranking officer in the machine shop aboard the Vulcan, managing a crew of men often twice his own age. During his Navy tenure he earned the Philippine Liberation Medal, many good conduct medals, the American Theatre Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Medal, the Victory Medal, and the Occupation of Japan Medal, among others.

Following the end of WWII, Walt reenlisted and served in the U.S. Naval Air Corps for 5 more years during the Korean conflict, in the Corsair Squadron VF-652. He was Honorably Discharged from the U.S. Navy in 1953.

Walt later attended the American Technical College and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Following graduation he was hired by the College as an instructor, where he taught engineering classes for 7 years, and within that time was promoted to Assistant Director of the College.

Walt married Sandra Kay Bank in December 1964. They were together 59 years at the time of his passing.

Walt later accepted a position as Senior Design Engineer for Adamson United and then went on to become Director of Engineering at Morgan Adhesives (Mac-Tac). He created his own engineering firm called WESCO Enterprises, which employed contract engineers, office and sales staff. He sold the business and accepted an offer by Myers Industries to become Director of Engineering in the Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina facility.

Walt retired from Myers Industries in 1991. Bored with retirement, within a few months he went back to work and taught Algebra, Calculus and other math related courses at Roanoke Rapids HS and other adult GED programs at Halifax College. He continued private math tutoring until just a few years before his passing.

During "retirement", Walt created Three Thirty Engineering Company and began world wide rubber machinery consulting for such clients as Michelin, Goodyear and Bridgestone-Firestone. His consulting work took him to many far flung places such as Mexico, Canada, and China. One of has final larger jobs included brokering a sale of rubbery machinery to the Chinese and the Saudis. He continued working part time up to a few weeks before his passing away.

Walter was the creator of several industry patents, including the peel and stick floor tile, material for NASA space suits and the structural honeycomb. Walt served on the committee which obtained approval for the commission of the purple heart postage stamp.

Throughout his life he was an avid bowler, bringing home the silver medal in the National Senior Olympics. He also enjoyed boating, poker playing and harness horse racing. He was a supporter of the Arts and served as Vice President of the Roanoke Valley Arts Council, as well as President of the Lake Gaston Homeowner's Association.

Walter was a member of the Mogadore VFW Post 8487 and the Maranatha Church of God in Alliance, where he served as head of the Veterans Ministry Program for several years.

Walter leaves behind his wife, Sandra Kay (Bank) of Hartville; daughters Michelle Stine Makkos of Uniontown and Teddi Lynn (Tom) Coco of Prescott, Arizona and grand children Nathaniel Frederick Barnoff of Uniontown, and Olivia Grace Barnoff of Uniontown and Tampa, Florida, as well as many other extended family members, friends, and colleagues. He was preceded in death by his father, Walter Nathan Stine, mother Fairy Dale Thompson Stine Miller, sister Ida Leota Stine Johnston, and beloved in laws Calvin John Bank and Goldie Agnes Makkos Bank.
