Wiley Smith, Jr.
Wiley Smith, Jr., 84, of Cuyahoga Falls, passed away November 18, 2011. Wiley was born in Akron on September 29, 1927 to the late Wiley Smith and Emma Phillips Smith. In 1936 Wiley moved to Tallmadge and graduated from Tallmadge High School. Wiley joined the U.S. Army and finished his enlistment in 1946. He then attended The University of Akron and graduated in 1950 with a BA in Mechanical Engineering. He was employed with the M.A. Knight Co. of Akron as Plant Manager for 35 years. Later he worked 9 years as VP of Oxycon Inc. and 17 years as President of SDK, Inc. Wiley was an avid handball player for over 35 years. He enjoyed watching the Cleveland Indians, Browns, and Cavaliers, as well as Ohio State Football and Basketball. For 19 years, Wiley was involved with the Akron Quarter Midget Association. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his half sister, Gertrude Teets of Oakland, MD and half brother, Robert Beckett of Akron. He will be deeply missed by his wife of 26 years, Margaret (Maggie) Carroll Smith; son, Ken (Donna) Smith of Akron; daughters, Pamela Smith of Charlotte, NC, Sandra (Jerry) Nuckles of Grove City, OH, Ann (Ladd) Shaner of Novelty, OH, and Jennifer Bowen of Grove City; eleven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and his beloved Miniature Schnauzer, Sam. Visitation will be Sunday November 20 from 3-5 p.m. followed by a 5 p.m. funeral service at NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 131 N. Canton Rd.
