William Patrick "Pat" Boyd, 78, passed away on January 6th, 2019 surrounded by his loving family. Pat was born on March 10, 1940 in Akron to the late George A. and Maggie Lou Boyd. He graduated from Garfield High School in 1958 and was a life-long resident of the Akron area. He was a proud US Army veteran. While stationed in Germany he traveled many cities in Europe but spoke most fondly of his time in Italy. Pat was a man of many talents. He retired from Goodyear Tire & Rubber after 40 years and also taught marine repair at Portage Lakes Joint Vocational School in the early 1980's. Pat began his love of boating as a young man spending much of his time on the Portage Lakes and working at his brother-in-law's marine business. He turned a dream into reality in 1983 when he opened Pat's Boats in Springfield Township; a source of great pride and accomplishment for over 30 years. Pat was a Freemason and a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite. He was also a devoted Cleveland sports fan, enjoyed bowling, playing poker, and trips to Las Vegas. He was a political enthusiast and loved to share his views on the latest political happenings.
He was preceded in death by his brothers; George A. Jr. and Donnie, sisters; Bennie Joyce, Anna, Barbara, Sue, and Mary Jo. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Marie; daughters, Kelly Boyd; Leanne (Scott) Hughes; and son, James Glunt; granddaughters Lynnessa Hughes and Jessica West; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and loved ones.
Friends may call at Newcomer Funeral Home, 131 N. Canton Rd., Akron; Friday, January 18 from 5-8 p.m. and Saturday, January 19 from 10 a.m. to Noon with funeral service immediately following, Rev. Bernard Christy officiating. Interment at Greenlawn Cemetery to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The American Heart Association.
