William Henry Powers
William Henry Powers, age 85, met his Savior face to face on October 9, 2009, after a sic month battle with glioblastoma.
He was born on August 14, 1924 on Hettie, West Virginia (near Buckhannon), to the late Coy and Dora Powers. He gave his heart to Christ as a 16-year-old teenager in 1940, at Buckhannon Church of the Nazerene, and served his Lord faithfully.
Mr. Powers graduated from Upshur-County High School in 1942 and West Virginia University with a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering. He move to Akron, Ohio in 1955 and began a career with Goodyear Aerospace, from which he retired in 1989 after 34 years of service. He was a member of Church of Nazarene for 69 years, most recently at Southeast Church of the Nazarene on Tallmadge, Ohio. He loved his church and served faithfully as church treasurer, music director, board member, and Sunday school teacher. He served in the navy during World War II in the Pacific.
He loved his West Virginia Mountaineers and was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs. He enjoyed many years golfing with the Goodyear golf leagues even after retirement.
He is survived devoted wife of 61 years, Louis Anne (Knode) Powers; his caring children, Annette (Bob) Weaver of Houston, Texas, Denise (Ed) Kissel Fabian of Akron, and Dale (Kay) Powers of Akron; five grandchildren (Adam Powers of Akron, Lydia Smith of Hartville, Caleb Smith of Akron, Clint and Sarah Weaver of Houston, Texas) and two great –grandchildren (Noah and Elijah Smith of Hartville). He has left many friends and family who loved him. He particularly loved the staff at Bob Evans in Ellet, especially Jenny and Crystal. In addition to his parents, Mr. Powers was preceded in death by his brother, Basil Powers, of Buckhannon, West Virginia.
The family will receive friends at Newcomer Funeral Home, 131 North Canton Road, Akron, Ohio on Sunday, October 11 from 4 to 7 p.m. A celebration of his life in Christ will be held Monday, October 12 at 10 a.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, With Pastor Kevin Angel officiating. Burial will follow at Hillside Memorial Park with a military service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Southeast Church of the Nazarene Missionary Society.
