William W. Mcintyre

William "Pops" W. McIntyre, 87, of Akron, passed away suddenly surrounded by his family on March 9, 2019.

Pops was born on March 27, 1931 in Akron, Ohio. He proudly served in the US Army from 1948 until 1951. His basic training took place in Fort Knox, Kentucky. He served with the 7th division-17th infantry regiment, and for 18 of those months he served in Japan. He was transferred to Korea in 1950, where he fought in the following battles: Pork Chop, The Hook, O'Brady, Wanjew Ambush, and several others. During his time in the service, he was awarded 11 medals, including: 1 Silver Battlestar (for five major battles), and the Silver Star, for above and beyond the call of duty.

While serving in the Army, he was active in boxing. In August of 1949, he won the Far East Middleweight Championship Title. He held a proud boxing record of 40 KO's and 28 TKO's. On September 7, 2008, Pops was inducted into the Summit County Hall of Fame. He continued to work out with the Terminator Boxing Club in Green, where he was given the title of the oldest trainer when he retired in 2018. He worked with his close friend and professional boxer, Mr. Doyle Baird. Together, they helped to train troubled kids and prepare for upcoming champions.

Following his time in the US Army, Pops worked for 35 years at the Atlantic Foundry as a steel molder.

In 1954, Pops married the love of his life, Pauline. Over the years, they were blessed with seven wonderful children, two boys and five girls.

Pops also served as a member and trustee of the Lakeview Lighthouse Church.

He had a wonderful sense of humor and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Pops was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Pauline; sister, Violet; and brother, Joseph.

He is survived by his children, Robert, Shirley (Ray), Brenda (Jim), Joyce, Linda, William (Linda), and Pattie (David); siblings, Bertha, Lester, Michael, John, Harriet, Helen; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; and many other family and friends.

Visitation will take place on Friday March 15, 2019 at Lakeview Lighthouse Church 1065 Kubler Trail, Akron, OH 44312 from 4pm until 9pm. A funeral service will take place on Saturday at 10am at the church. Interment to follow at Hillside Memorial Park.
