On Tuesday, August 17, 2021, William (Bill) H. Zanes ascended the stairway to heaven. He was greeted by his loving wife of 39 years, Erika Zanes; his daughter and traveling companion, Sylvia Keener; his son and bowling partner, Thom Zanes; and infant grandson whom he can finally hold, Jason Keener. Bill was born on May 9, 1933 in Millville, New Jersey to the late Harry and Agnes Zanes. He was a proud Vietnam veteran and retired from the U.S. Army after 20 years of service. During his time stationed in Germany, he met his beloved wife Erika. While there, they spent the early years traveling the countryside, spending time with German family and starting a family of their own. It is because of his 13 years stationed abroad that he called Germany his second home.
After his military service, Bill spent 20 years as a letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service building long term friendships, retiring in 1995. In his free time, Bill enjoyed watching sports as an avid Browns and Indians fan, traveling the U.S. with family, and bowling. He shared an avid love for music with his son Bill. He had an expansive collection of vinyl records, reel to reel recordings, and CDs. He also had a love for food and enjoyed when his daughter Karen would cook for holidays or a barbecue.
Above all, Bill loved being Pop, Grandpa, and Pop-Pop to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his son, William Zanes; daughter, Karen Thomas (Teddy Anderson); sister, Sophie Cox; grandchildren, Christine (Joshua) Clarkston, Robert (Brandi) Keener, Amanda (Paul) Averbukh, Vincent (Brittany) Thomas, and Nichole Thomas; great-grandchildren, Avery, Aidan, Tristan, Mikayla, Layla, and Robert Jr.; friend and brother-in-law, John Moncur; daughter-in-law, Jan Zanes; and extended family in the U.S. and Germany as well as numerous friends. He will truly be missed by all who knew him.
The family would like to thank Summa Akron City ICU and Palliative/Hospice staff for their extreme compassion, professionalism, and exceptional care.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 24, 2021 from 10-12 followed by a 12 noon funeral service at NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, 131 N. Canton Rd., Akron. Interment at Hillside Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
